Topic : "Schumpeterian Competition and Creative Destruction: Strategies for Incumbents and Entrants" by Gianluigi  GIUSTIZIERO

In high-tech settings, the abundance of technological opportunities and entrepreneurial entry are the drivers of Schumpeterian competition, that is, the competition arising between incumbent firms and new entrants in the industry. Schumpeterian competition exhibits an asymmetry between incumbent and entrant behavior. On the one hand, incumbents enjoy a first-mover advantage because they have accumulated investments that give them a lead in erecting barriers to entry, improving existing products and services, and driving down cost. On the other hand, entrants enjoy a second-mover advantage in that they can learn from the incumbents' mistakes and be more flexible to explore novel technologies. Within the fascinating realms of Schumpeterian competition, this presentation explores which strategies incumbents and entrants can adopt to thwart the risk of obsolescence and displacement, an outcome known as creative destruction, and survive or even grow in the face of competition, experiencing an advantageous loop of value creation known as creative construction.
