DRAGON WHAT? cultural minute

The dragon boat is an ancestral Chinese craft with legendary origins...

Over 2,000 years ago, the great poet Qu Yuan, expelled from the kingdom for denouncing corruption, threw himself into the river. The villagers set out to rescue him, throwing "zongzi" (rice cakes) into the river to satiate the fish and prevent them from devouring his body. The fish then fled, disturbed by the vibrations of the drums set off by the boats of the fishermen who had come to rescue the unfortunate man. Since then, the tradition of eating zongzi and racing dragon boats to the beat of the drums has grown up.

This event has given rise to a veritable mass sport celebrated in Asia and Singapore.

10:00 - Arrival of participants at the nautical base
10:15 - Introduction / Safety instructions / Off-water training
10:30 - Launch / Training / Group photo in front of SG Flyer and MBS
12:00 - Final race
12:15 - Return to base
12:30 - Debriefing / Medal ceremony (yes, it's not a joke) / Networking

When: Saturday March 11, 10am sharp (it's too hot afterwards)
Participation: S$ 20 per person (face value: S$ 60)
