David Clovirola (SKEMA 2016), an ambitious man on the move
Meet David Clovirola, Business Development Manager DEWALT Outdoor at Stanley Black & Decker, an alumnus who is constantly pushing his limits in the demanding, fast-paced world of strategic marketing.
David, can you tell us about your journey since graduating from SKEMA?
After graduating in 2016, I moved from the Paris region to Lyon because I wanted a change of lifestyle. I got a job at Smartbox as a key account manager, an experience that taught me a lot about client portfolio management and strategic partnerships. While this position was very rewarding, I eventually realised that I wanted to focus more on the strategic and marketing side of things.
So I joined Stanley Black & Decker, where I am now Business Development Manager. I'm responsible for the sales and marketing development of the DEWALT Outdoor range and my role is to increase our presence in specialist retail stores and in France in general, to optimise our strategic partnerships, and to bring gardening and landscaping professionals innovative and competitive solutions to meet their needs.
Why did you choose the Grande École Programme and the work-study format?
The work-study format was an obvious choice for me: it was the perfect opportunity to gain work experience while continuing my studies. Financially, it allowed me to reduce the cost of my education, while preparing me for the demands of the job market.
While studying I had the opportunity to work at L'Oréal and Barilla, two very different but very formative environments. These experiences allowed me to develop a wide range of skills, gain confidence and refine my career goals. Being immersed in the corporate world, surrounded by professionals at different levels of seniority, gave me a better understanding of market expectations and enabled me to adapt my profile accordingly.
What memories do you have of your time at SKEMA?
My experience at SKEMA was rich and varied. I studied on the Paris, Sophia Antipolis and Raleigh campuses and each offered a unique perspective. In Raleigh, for example, I really soaked up American culture by getting away from the French students and immersing myself in the daily life of the locals. I still cherish my memories of that time.
My sandwich year also left a lasting impression on me. I was lucky enough to work for LVMH, and more specifically for Chaumet, where I discovered the demanding and refined world of high jewellery. Those experiences taught me the importance of storytelling, attention to detail and the pursuit of excellence, lessons that I still apply in my work today.
What advice do you have for SKEMA students and recent graduates?
1. Opt for the work-study format or long-term internships: there’s no better way to develop concrete skills and a solid professional network than by immersing yourself in a company for a period of time.
2. Always give your best: leave a lasting impression with each company. Make sure that even years from now your colleagues will remember you for your energy, commitment and results.
3. Be versatile: don't specialise too quickly. Explore different areas to find out what you're really passionate about and develop a broad, adaptable profile.
4. Stay humble and learn from others: the people around you, whether colleagues or assistants, have a lot to teach you. Success in business also depends on the quality of human relationships.
Any final words?
Every stage of your career is an opportunity to learn and grow. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, to try new things and, sometimes, to make mistakes. It's these experiences that will lead you to a fulfilling career that matches your aspirations.
Thank you to David for this inspiring testimonial. We wish him all the best for his future at Stanley Black & Decker!
